While we listen to tunes, made by ignorant fools,
Israel blocked the UN from delivering food,
They’ll bring in the troops and you won’t even glimpse at the news,
They make money of the products that we are quick to consume,
It’s not simply a question of differing views,
Forget emotions, this is fact, what I spit is the truth,
Makes no difference if you’re a Christian or if you’re a Jew,
They are just people living in different conditions to you,
They still die when you bomb their schools, mosques and hospitals,
It is not because of rockets, please god can you stop it all,
I’m not related to the strangers on the TV,
But I relate because those faces could have been me,
Words can never ever explain the raw tragedy,
It’s not a war they’re just murdering more rapidly,
We are automatically supporting pure savagery,
Imagine how you’d feel if it was your family,

The time had come to leave the West Bank, the place that the world doesn’t seem to want to find a place for, the corner of the earth that everyone seems to have rejected, and come back to the “up and coming, gay-friendly, beachy” city of Tel Aviv. I cannot find words to describe how it feels to be here, how nauseating, how painful to drive down and see the flags waving in front of Independence Park, to see the people walking around in swimsuits and the “Miami Hotel” gleaming in the sunlight. I went to the cinema today, and the whole thing was full of huge statues of different disney characters and Hollywood icons, every famous American movie was represented. I felt like my insides were caving in. I can’t go back to America, but I cannot stay here. What have we done? The most painful one was a statue of a Native American, probably from some horribly racist movie. Someday not too far off, that Native American “character,” the one we saw in movies but never really understood what happened to, will be the Palestinian.

This is the most confusing place I have ever been. I feel as though this entire city is one huge tribute to American culture. People drink and chill on the beach while close by a massive wall is being built, making it so that the nice white tourists don’t have to “deal” with all the “natives.” I’m starting to tear up just writing this, I feel so disgusted my stomach hurts. This is Palestine, the heart of the Arab world. You could come to this country and never even know that. They are erasing everything, absolutely everything, and it is all being rewritten by the narrative of the colonizers, as it always is. Someday, people are going to realize what they have erased, and they will wonder how they allowed themselves to wake up every day and go along with it.

I will forever prefer to visit the people of Palestine. I will never find happiness in visiting the spots where their exodus and ethnic cleansing produced a great mall or a great museum. This is the land that has always had a people, a fact that the settler-colonial experiment Zionism will forever try to erase. Any human being with a conscience has the responsibility to speak the truth, to not let an entire group of people be exterminated. This is not about the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, this is about the occupation of the entire state of Palestine. This is about the millions of refugees who have never been able to come home. They must be spoken for if anything is ever going to change.

Today I participated in a protest in solidarity with a group of Bedouins in the Naqab whose village has been demolished 40 times now. Every time it is demolished, they build it right back up, and every Sunday, they hold signs and protest by the highway, simply asking for the government to leave them alone, to stop reducing their village to ruins. The protest has actually more than 50 percent children. They held the signs and led the chants, and introduced themselves to us, curious about where we were from. Cars passed by, ignoring us. In a particularly ironic moment, a gigantic caterpillar bulldozer passed by and stopped at the stoplight for several moments. The children stared at it. I stared at them, starting at it, wondering what they must be thinking. This is the monster that they must fear, the real kind, that comes every few months to reduce their homes to piles of rubble. As we stood next the highway, our bodies becoming coated in dust with each passing car, I felt the best that I have felt on this trip. I thought to myself, I will stay here. I will come back every Sunday and stand here with them, because nothing else in my life feels as right as this. Part of me still wishes that I could.
